Social Security payment schedule 2026: official calendar dates for November, December, and January direct deposits.

Today is Tuesday, November 3, and for millions of Americans that means one thing: the deposit has landed, or it is about to. If your benefits started before May 1997, or you get both Social Security and SSI, this is your day. Everyone else is staring at the calendar, counting Wednesdays, and wondering why their neighbor got paid a week earlier.

The good news is that the Social Security payment schedule is not random. It follows a short set of rules, and once you know them, you can figure out your own payment date for any month of the year without searching again.

This guide gives you the exact dates for November 2026, December 2026 and January 2027, explains why some payments show up early, and breaks down the new 3.6% cost-of-living raise coming in 2027. You will also see how Medicare Part B can eat into that raise, how your claiming age changes your check, and what to do if a payment does not show up.

Everything here is based on the Social Security Administration (SSA) calendar and recent reporting, checked as of November 3, 2026.

Quick answer: Most people are paid on a Wednesday that depends on their birth date. In November 2026 that means November 10 (born 1st–10th), November 18 (born 11th–20th) and November 25 (born 21st–31st). Pre-May 1997 beneficiaries were paid November 3. SSI for November was paid early, on October 30.

Two things stand out.

First, the November 10 payment lands on a Tuesday, not the usual Wednesday. That is because Wednesday, November 11 is Veterans Day, a federal holiday. When a payment date falls on a holiday, the SSA pays on the business day before it.

Second, SSI for November arrived in October. November 1 fell on a Sunday this year, so the SSA moved the payment to the last business day before it, which was Friday, October 30. That is not an extra payment. It is the same money, just a few days early.

If you want to check your own month, you can use your my Social Security account on the SSA website, or look at your bank’s pending deposits a day or two before your date.

How the Social Security Payment Schedule Works

The system looks strange from the outside, but it is built on two simple ideas.

Rule 1: Your birthday decides your Wednesday

If you started getting Social Security in May 1997 or later, you are paid on a Wednesday. Which Wednesday depends on the day of the month you were born:

  • Born on the 1st through the 10th: second Wednesday of the month
  • Born on the 11th through the 20th: third Wednesday of the month
  • Born on the 21st through the 31st: fourth Wednesday of the month

Only the day matters, not the month or year. Someone born on March 14 and someone born on October 14 are paid on the same day, every month.

This rule applies to retirement, disability (SSDI) and survivor benefits.

Rule 2: The 3rd of the month for older claims and dual beneficiaries

Two groups skip the birthday rule and get paid on the 3rd of the month:

  • People who started getting Social Security before May 1997
  • People who get both Social Security and SSI

If the 3rd lands on a weekend or holiday, the payment moves to the business day before it.

Rule 3: SSI is paid on the 1st

Supplemental Security Income is a separate program for older adults and people with disabilities who have little income and few resources. It is paid on the 1st of the month. When the 1st is a weekend or holiday, the payment arrives on the last business day before it.

That one rule is behind most of the “missing payment” panic you see online. We will come back to it below.

Why does the SSA use a birthday schedule at all?

Spreading payments across the month keeps the system steady. Instead of sending tens of millions of deposits on one day, the SSA staggers them. It also helps banks, call centers and the Treasury handle the load.

SSI Payment Schedule 2026: Why Some Months Have Two Payments and Some Have None

SSI is where most of the confusion lives, so let us slow down.

SSI is paid on the 1st. In 2026, five SSI payments were moved up because the 1st fell on a weekend or holiday:

  • January 30 (for February, since February 1 was a Sunday)
  • February 27 (for March, since March 1 was a Sunday)
  • July 31 (for August, since August 1 was a Saturday)
  • October 30 (for November, since November 1 was a Sunday)
  • December 31 (for January 2027, since January 1 is New Year’s Day)

Look at what that does to the calendar. In a month like October 2026, an SSI recipient sees two deposits, one for October on the 1st and one for November on the 30th. Then November shows nothing at all.

It is the same amount of money. You did not get a bonus in October, and you are not missing a payment in November. You were paid for November a few days early.

The trouble starts when people budget by calendar month. If your rent is due on the 5th of November and your whole check came on October 30, you need to set that money aside. Treat the early payment as November’s money, not October’s.

SSI dates for December 2026

  • Tuesday, December 1: SSI for December
  • Thursday, December 31: SSI for January 2027 (paid early)

This means no SSI deposit is dated in January 2027. The longest gap of the year follows, because the next SSI payment, for February, comes on February 1.

If you live paycheck to paycheck, that stretch is the one to plan for.

December 2026 Social Security Payment Dates

December is simple, with one twist at the very end.

Who you arePayment date
SSITuesday, December 1
Before May 1997 or dual SSI/Social SecurityThursday, December 3
Birthday 1st–10thWednesday, December 9
Birthday 11th–20thWednesday, December 16
Birthday 21st–31stWednesday, December 23
SSI for January 2027Thursday, December 31

The twist: January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday, and January 3, 2027 is a Sunday. Because of that, the January payments for the “3rd of the month” group and for SSI both move back to Thursday, December 31. People who get both Social Security and SSI may see all of it arrive within a day or two at the end of the month.

January 2027 Social Security Payment Dates (Already Set)

The SSA has published its 2027 calendar, so you can plan ahead.

  • SSI and the “3rd of the month” group: paid early on Thursday, December 31, 2026. Nothing is dated in January for these two groups.
  • Born 1st–10th: Wednesday, January 13, 2027
  • Born 11th–20th: Wednesday, January 20, 2027
  • Born 21st–31st: Wednesday, January 27, 2027

These are the first checks that include the new COLA for most people, which brings us to the biggest news of the fall.

Social Security COLA 2027: What the 3.6% Raise Means for You

On October 14, 2026, the SSA announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027.

Here are the key facts:

  • It is the largest raise since 2023, when benefits rose 8.7%.
  • The SSA says it lifts the average retired worker’s check by about $75 a month.
  • It reaches roughly 76 million people, including about 72 million Social Security beneficiaries and around 7.3 million SSI recipients.
  • It applies to retirement, disability, survivor and SSI benefits.
  • Most people see it in the January 2027 payment. SSI recipients see it earlier, on December 31, 2026, because their January payment is paid in December.
  • You do not need to apply. The raise is automatic.

How the COLA is calculated

The SSA compares the average inflation reading (using an index called CPI-W) for July, August and September of this year with the same three months of the last year a raise took effect. The change, rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent, is your COLA.

This year’s number was pushed higher by energy costs, which jumped after the outbreak of the Iran war and have stayed high because of problems in oil and gasoline supply.

How the COLA has changed

YearCOLA
20238.7%
20243.2%
20252.5%
20262.8%
20273.6%

A quick way to find your new check

Take your current monthly benefit and multiply it by 1.036.

Example: a $2,000 monthly benefit becomes $2,072. A $1,500 benefit becomes $1,554. A $2,500 benefit becomes $2,590.

For reference, the average retired worker was getting about $2,083 a month as of July 2026.

One more number: the tax cap

The maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security tax rises to $192,300 in 2027, up from $184,500. If you work and earn above the old limit, you will pay Social Security tax on more of your income next year.

When will you see your COLA notice?

If you have a my Social Security account and signed up for electronic notices, you can see your COLA letter online in late November, about three weeks before paper letters arrive in the mail. Reports say you need to sign up for electronic delivery by November 18 to get the early online notice.

Will Medicare Eat Your 2027 Raise?

This is the part nobody puts in the headline, so here it is plainly.

Most people on Medicare pay their Part B premium straight out of their Social Security check. When the premium goes up, your take-home raise goes down.

  • The 2026 standard Part B premium is $202.90 a month.
  • The Medicare Trustees Report projects $209.50 for 2027, a rise of $6.60.
  • Some private forecasters expect it to land higher, in the $216 to $219 range.
  • The official number comes from CMS, usually in mid-November.
  • The Part B deductible is projected to rise from $283 to $292.

Do the math with the average benefit. A 3.6% raise on $2,083 is about $75. If the premium rises $6.60, you keep roughly $68. If it rises closer to $15, you keep around $60.

There is also a protection called the hold harmless rule. In general, it prevents your Part B premium increase from reducing your Social Security check below what you got the year before. It does not help everyone, and it does not apply to higher earners who pay extra income-related charges, so check your own notice when it arrives.

The takeaway: your raise is real, but plan on keeping a bit less than the headline number.

Social Security Payments by Age: How Your Claiming Age Changes Your Check

Many people search for “social security payments by age” and mean one of two things: when they are paid (covered above, since it depends on birth day) or how much they get based on the age they start. Here is the second one in plain words.

Full retirement age

For anyone born in 1960 or later, full retirement age is 67. That is the age at which you get 100% of the benefit you earned.

Claiming early

You can start as early as 62. The trade-off is a permanent cut. At 62, your check is roughly 30% smaller than it would be at 67.

Claiming late

Waiting past full retirement age adds about 8% per year until age 70. After 70, there is no extra reward for waiting.

What it looks like in practice

Claiming ageEffect on your monthly check
62About 30% lower than your full benefit
67100% of your full benefit
70About 24% higher than your full benefit

These are general rules. Your exact amount depends on your 35 highest-earning years, so the best source is your own statement in your my Social Security account.

Social Security payments calculator

The SSA runs free official tools that estimate your benefit. If you want a quick sense of your number, log in to your SSA account, open your earnings record, and use the retirement estimator. It shows what you would get at 62, 67 and 70 using your real earnings history.

Be careful with random online calculators that ask for lots of personal details. The official tool is free and does not need payment.

Social Security Payments for January, February and October 2026 (Past Dates)

Many people search for earlier months to check whether a deposit was on time. Here are the dates that already passed this year.

January 2026

  • SSI: paid early on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, because January 1 is New Year’s Day
  • Before May 1997 or dual SSI/Social Security: Friday, January 2
  • Born 1st–10th: January 14
  • Born 11th–20th: January 21
  • Born 21st–31st: January 28

February 2026

  • SSI: paid early on Friday, January 30, because February 1 was a Sunday
  • Before May 1997 or dual SSI/Social Security: Tuesday, February 3
  • Born 1st–10th: February 11
  • Born 11th–20th: February 18
  • Born 21st–31st: February 25

October 2026

  • Born 1st–10th: October 14
  • Born 11th–20th: October 21
  • Born 21st–31st: October 28
  • SSI for November: Friday, October 30 (paid early)

The 3rd-of-the-month group is paid on the business day before the 3rd when the 3rd falls on a weekend. In October 2026, the 3rd was a Saturday, so that group was paid on Friday, October 2. Confirm any single date with the official SSA calendar.

SSI Payment Schedule 2026: Direct Deposit, Cash App and Chime

A lot of SSI recipients get paid through a prepaid card or a mobile banking app instead of a traditional bank. People often search “SSI payment schedule 2026 direct deposit Cash App” or “Chime” because they see money show up a day or two before the official date.

Here is what is worth knowing:

  • The SSA date does not change. SSI is still paid on the 1st, or the last business day before it when the 1st is a weekend or holiday.
  • Some apps and banks make deposits available early. That is a feature of the bank or app, not a change by the SSA, and it is not guaranteed. Check your provider’s own policy.
  • You need the right details. To receive federal benefits by direct deposit in any account, the SSA needs your routing number and account number. Use the ones shown in your own app or bank, and keep them current.
  • If a deposit is missing, contact your bank or app first, then the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

Direct deposit is the standard method. If you still get a paper check or a card, the SSA can help you switch.

Social Security Disability (SSDI) Payment Schedule 2026

“Social Security disability payment schedule” is one of the most common searches, and the answer is the same as for retirement benefits.

  • SSDI follows the birthday Wednesday rule: second Wednesday for birthdays on the 1st–10th, third Wednesday for the 11th–20th, fourth Wednesday for the 21st–31st.
  • If you get both SSDI and SSI, or started getting benefits before May 1997, you are paid on the 3rd of the month.
  • SSDI is paid a month behind. The benefit for October, for example, is paid in November.
  • SSI, by contrast, is paid for the current month, on the 1st.

The 3.6% COLA in 2027 applies to SSDI too.

Social Security COLA 2026 Payment Schedule PDF: Where To Get a Printable Copy

If you want a printable calendar, the SSA publishes its official payment schedule every year as a PDF on ssa.gov. Search for “Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments” with the year. The 2027 version is listed as SSA Publication No. 05-10031.

Print it, mark your date, and keep it near your calendar. Note that the 2026 schedule includes the 2.8% COLA that started in January 2026, and the 3.6% raise begins with the January 2027 benefit.

What To Do If Your Social Security Payment Is Late or Missing

A late deposit is stressful, but the cause is usually simple. Work through this order.

  1. Check the date again. Many “missing” payments are early ones. Look at the previous month’s end, especially for SSI, and remember the Veterans Day change this November.
  2. Wait three business days. The SSA asks you to wait three business days past your date before reporting a problem for most electronic payments.
  3. Call your bank first. The SSA says a delay may come from how your bank posts the deposit. Ask if a payment is pending.
  4. Contact the SSA. If your bank has nothing, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit your local office. If the payment is due, the SSA will review the case and replace it.
  5. Check your account details. If you changed banks or closed an account, make sure the SSA has your current information.

Never pay anyone to “unlock” or “speed up” a Social Security payment. The SSA does not charge for that, and the person offering is likely running a scam.

Simple Tips To Plan Around the Schedule

A few habits make this calendar work for you instead of against you.

  • Mark early SSI months. Put October 30 and December 31 on your calendar as “next month’s money.”
  • Plan for the January gap. With no SSI date in January 2027, make sure the December 31 deposit stretches until February 1.
  • Set up direct deposit. Paper checks are slower and easier to lose. Electronic payment is the standard.
  • Keep your address and bank information current. A wrong account number can delay payment for weeks.
  • Watch for the COLA letter. Check that your new amount matches what you expect.
  • Expect the Medicare notice. Look for your Part B premium announcement after mid-November.
  • Ignore calls claiming to be the SSA. Real SSA staff will not threaten you or demand gift cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I get my Social Security check this month?

It depends on your birth date. If you were born on the 1st–10th, you are paid on the second Wednesday; 11th–20th, the third Wednesday; and 21st–31st, the fourth Wednesday. In November 2026 those dates are November 10, 18 and 25. If you started benefits before May 1997 or get both Social Security and SSI, you are paid on the 3rd.

Why was my SSI payment paid in October for November?

November 1, 2026 was a Sunday. SSI is paid on the 1st, and when the 1st is a weekend or holiday, the payment moves to the last business day before it. That made the date Friday, October 30. It is not a bonus and not a skipped payment.

Why is the November 10 payment on a Tuesday?

Wednesday, November 11 is Veterans Day, a federal holiday. The SSA pays the day before a holiday, so the second-Wednesday group is paid on Tuesday, November 10.

When is the December 2026 Social Security payment?

For birthday-based payments: December 9, 16 and 23. The 3rd-of-the-month group is paid Thursday, December 3. SSI is paid Tuesday, December 1, and the early SSI payment for January 2027 arrives Thursday, December 31.

What is the 2027 Social Security COLA?

It is 3.6%, announced on October 14, 2026. It adds about $75 a month to the average retired worker’s check and takes effect with January 2027 benefits. SSI recipients see their raise on December 31, 2026.

What are the Social Security payments for 2027?

The SSA has already published the 2027 calendar. The same rules apply: birthday Wednesdays, the 3rd for older claims and dual beneficiaries, and the 1st for SSI. In 2027, SSI will be paid twice in April, July and December, and not at all in January, May and August, because of weekends and holidays.

Do I need to apply for the COLA?

No. It is added automatically to your benefit.

Is the Medicare premium coming out of my check?

If you are enrolled in Medicare Part B and receive Social Security, the premium is usually deducted before the money reaches you. The 2027 amount is not official yet. The Trustees project $209.50, and CMS is expected to announce the real figure around mid-November.

Can I get my Social Security payment earlier?

In general, no. The SSA does not offer early payment on request. The only early deposits are the date shifts caused by weekends and holidays.

What if I was born on the 31st?

You are in the 21st–31st group and are paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

What should I do if my deposit does not arrive?

Wait three business days, check with your bank, then call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit a local office.

Final Thoughts

The Social Security payment schedule looks messy until you see the three rules behind it: birthday Wednesdays, the 3rd for older claims and dual beneficiaries, and the 1st for SSI. Weekends and holidays then push a few payments earlier, which is why November 2026 looks odd.

Here is what to remember right now. If you are paid by birthday, your November dates are November 10, 18 or 25. SSI for November already came on October 30. In December, the early January SSI and 3rd-of-the-month payments arrive on December 31. And your 2027 raise is 3.6%, though Medicare may take a slice of it.
